    Nature, Structure, and Chemical Composition

    Ammonium nitrate is an ionic salt composed of the ammonium cation (NH4+) and the nitrate anion (NO3).

    • Ammonium cation (NH4+) a tetrahedral polyatomic ion with a central nitrogen atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms.
    • Nitrate anion (NO3) a trigonal planar polyatomic ion with a central nitrogen atom bonded to three oxygen atoms; its negative charge is delocalized through resonance.

    In solid form, ammonium and nitrate ions are held together by strong electrostatic forces in a regular crystal lattice. This compound is highly soluble in water, and its dissolution is endothermic, meaning it absorbs heat and lowers the temperature of the solution.

    Production Methods

    The main industrial method for producing ammonium nitrate is the neutralization of ammonia (NH3) with nitric acid (HNO3):

    NH3(g) + HNO3(aq) → NH4NO3(aq)

    This reaction is strongly exothermic. The initial product is an aqueous ammonium nitrate solution, which is then concentrated, crystallized, and granulated to produce the desired solid forms.

    Forms of Ammonium Nitrate

    This compound is available in several forms, each suited to specific applications:

    • Prill: small, porous spherical particles produced by spraying concentrated ammonium nitrate solution in a prilling tower.
    • Granule: larger, denser particles produced by mechanical granulation.
    • Crystal: pure crystalline form, usually used in laboratory and specialized applications.
    • Solution: aqueous ammonium nitrate solutions of varying concentrations, especially used in agriculture.

     

    Ammonium Nitrate as a Fertilizer

    Ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3) containing 34% nitrogen is considered one of the most important nitrogen fertilizers in the world. Its importance comes from the presence of both major plant-available nitrogen forms: ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen.

    Dual Nitrogen Nature of 34-0-0 NPK

    • Nitrate nitrogen (NO3): rapidly absorbed by plant roots; highly mobile in soil and especially effective for fast growth, but also prone to leaching.
    • Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4+) : held by soil particles and organic matter, released more gradually, and less prone to leaching.

    Crystal / Powder

    • Fine crystalline or powdered form.
    • Fastest dissolution in water.
    • More prone to caking and difficult dry spreading.

    Solution

    • Aqueous ammonium nitrate solution.
    • Easy to apply through fertigation or spraying systems.
    • Requires specialized equipment and careful management.

    Solubility

    Ammonium nitrate is highly soluble in water.

    • At 20°C, about 192 g  dissolves in 100  ml of water.
    • Its dissolution is endothermic, so the solution cools down.
    • This high solubility makes it suitable for fertigation.

    Application Methods

    • Broadcasting: spreading fertilizer evenly over the soil surface.
    • Banding / Row application: placing fertilizer in bands near seeds or roots.
    • Top dressing / Side dressing: applying after crop establishment.
    • Fertigation: adding fertilizer to irrigation water.
    • Foliar application: spraying dilute solution directly onto leaves.

    Important Considerations

    • Proper nitrogen management is essential due to leaching risk.
    • Sandy soils require more careful, split applications.
    • Ammonium nitrate has an acidifying effect on soil.
    • Compatibility with other fertilizers should always be checked before mixing.
